ATS Global delivers consulting, execution and support services across a wide range of industries including food and beverage, data centres, chemicals, mining, port infrastructure, automotive, and aerospace and defence.

The Australian subsidiary of ATS Global, and employer for this role, is ATS Applied Tech Systems Pty Ltd, based in Mulgrave, Victoria.

Role Overview

The Electronics Engineer (SCADA & Control Systems) is responsible for the design, development, integration, testing and commissioning of electronic monitoring and supervisory control systems for industrial and critical infrastructure environments, with a particular focus on data centre and process industry applications.

The role requires applying electronics engineering principles to the specification, configuration and integration of electronic instrumentation, programmable controllers, communication networks and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) platforms.

The engineer designs electronic system architectures that interface diverse electronic equipment — including programmable logic controllers (PLCs), building management systems (BMS), electrical power monitoring systems (EPMS), uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), automatic transfer switches (ATS), variable frequency drives (VFDs), electronic switchgear, chillers, and environmental monitoring sensors — into unified SCADA and PLC solutions.

This is a hands-on technical role encompassing the full project lifecycle from requirements analysis and functional design through factory acceptance testing, site installation, commissioning, client training and post-deployment support.

Because ATS Global operates internationally and relies on collaborative teamwork across borders, candidates must speak a language that enables them to communicate effectively with at least one of our teams in Mexico, Spain, Italy, Germany, or Turkey.

Key Responsibilities

Electronic System Design and Integration

  • Design electronic control system architectures for PLC, SCADA and monitoring solutions, specifying hardware, communication interfaces and network topologies.
  • Develop functional design specifications (FDS) for electronic monitoring and control systems based on client user requirements specifications (URS) and process descriptions.
  • Specify and select electronic instrumentation, sensors, I/O modules and communication gateways for integration with automation platforms.
  • Design and implement industrial communication networks utilising protocols including Modbus RTU/TCP, BACnet, SNMP, and MQTT for the interconnection of electronic equipment.
  • Develop electronic system interface designs for the integration of diverse electronic equipment including PLCs (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Johnson Controls), UPS systems, electronic switchgear, ATS units, HVAC controllers, and chiller plant controllers.

SCADA Platform Development and Configuration

  • Develop and configure SCADA applications on the Inductive Automation Ignition platform (Vision and Perspective modules) for real-time monitoring and control of electronic equipment and systems.
  • Design and implement real-time data visualisation dashboards, alarm management systems, historical data trending and reporting functions.
  • Develop scripting logic and database queries (Python, SQL) to support SCADA application performance, automated reporting and data analytics.
  • Implement user and role-based access management, alarm notification pipelines and system redundancy configurations.

Testing, Commissioning and Support

  • Prepare and execute factory acceptance test (FAT) plans and site acceptance test (SAT) plans for electronic control systems.
  • Commission electronic monitoring and control systems on client sites, including point-to-point verification of electronic instrumentation, communication link testing, and functional validation.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve electronic system integration issues during commissioning and post-deployment.
  • Provide post-deployment support for installed electronic monitoring and control systems to ensure ongoing operational reliability.

Documentation and Training

  • Produce quality technical documentation including functional design specifications, test plans, commissioning records, as-built documentation, and operation and maintenance manuals.
  • Develop and deliver operation and maintenance training to clients and internal teams on deployed electronic monitoring and control systems.
  • Assist in the production of technical proposals and tender documentation for prospective projects.
  • Maintain document version control and configuration management in accordance with the company’s quality management system.

Standards, Safety and Compliance

  • Ensure all electronic system designs comply with relevant Australian and international standards including AS/NZS 3000, AS/NZS 3008, and applicable data centre standards (e.g., Uptime Institute, TIA-942).
  • Observe and promote safe working practices at all times, including compliance with site-specific safety requirements on client premises.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of ATS engineering standards, design templates and technical procedures.

Required Qualifications and Experience

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electronics Engineering, Electronic and Automation Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline from a recognised university.
  • Eligibility for assessment by Engineers Australia as an Electronics Engineer (ANZSCO 233411) at the Professional Engineer level, or equivalent overseas qualification assessment.
  • Eligibility for registration as Professional Engineer in the field of Electrical Engineering
  • Inductive Automation Ignition certification (Gold or above) is mandatory.

Experience

  • Minimum of five (5) years of post-qualification experience in electronics engineering, with demonstrated experience in the design, development and commissioning of electronic monitoring and control systems.
  • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience configuring and deploying SCADA systems, with minimum one year experience with Inductive Automation Ignition.
  • Practical experience integrating electronic equipment via industrial communication protocols such as Modbus RTU/TCP, BACnet, SNMP, Ethernet/IP and/or MQTT.
  • Experience in the development of SCADA applications for critical infrastructure environments such as data centres, process industries or building management systems is highly regarded.
